Activating those deep abdominal muscles can be trickier than you think, and doesn't always happen automatically, but once you're able to engage them properly, it can help with issues like back pain & continence problems, as well as lead to a flatter tummy, better posture, and getting the best out of a workout. 

You don't have to be super fit to be able to effectively activate your deep core muscles; in fact I've worked with personal trainers who haven't been able to do it, and obese clients who can, so your body size and shape doesn't determine your innate ability to engage your core.
